September 2015 Calendar Image

September15

SeptemberThe 2015 calendar showcases twelve of our team’s favorite Pictometry images out of more than 28 million captured in the 2013-2014 image season. The September image takes us to the Port of Los Angeles.

What would become the Port of Los Angeles began as a shallow mud flat where ships had to beach in order to unload their cargo. In 1871 a channel was dug allowing ships to unload more safely and efficiently than before. The current port got its start in 1899 with the construction of a breakwater. Now the port handles over 280 billion dollars in shipping annually and can accommodate the largest cargo ships in the world. (Image capture date 02/01/14.)
