August 2015 Calendar Image

August

AugustThe 2015 calendar showcases twelve of our team’s favorite Pictometry images out of more than 28 million captured in the 2013-2014 image season. The August image takes us to British Columbia.

Timber rafting originated as a way to transport large amounts of lumber before the advent of modern shipping. Large numbers of logs are rafted together for transport to a lumber mill. This used to mean teams of oarsmen were necessary to steer the vast rafts. It was not uncommon for cabins to be built on the rafts to accommodate the crew of twenty or more. Now the job is done by the crew of a tugboat with greater efficiency, safety and comfort. This timber operation is situated just south of the Village of Port Mellon, British Columbia.
