May 2017 Calendar Image

May damThe 2017 calendar showcases twelve of our team’s favorite Pictometry® images out of the millions captured throughout the year. The May 2017 image brings us to California. About twenty-five miles northeast of Sacramento, CA, sits the Folsom Dam, poised on the cusp of Folsom Lake-- a reservoir formed by he damming of the north and south forks of the American River. The dam itself is 340 feet high, flanked by two earthen wing dikes and supported by several smaller dams along the west and southeast sides of the reservoir. Completed in 1955 by the United States Army Corps of Engineers, the dam was built to replace a smaller dam that had been built in the latter years of the nineteenth century. A project is currently underway building an auxiliary spillway to increase protection against flooding. (Image coordinates: 38.707209, -121.157084) 05-May
