The 2017 calendar showcases twelve of our team’s favorite Pictometry® images out of the millions captured throughout the year. We captured the June 2017 image in a unique locale in Texas.
The salvaged dream of Houston oil man John Mecom, the so-called Flamingo Isles were once intended to be a booming city catering to the wealthy and privileged. They included a private airport, twenty miles of marina, country clubs, yacht clubs, hotels and even a coastal amusement park.
When money ran out in 1969, the project was abandoned for nearly thirty years until 2012, when an Austin firm purchased the property and began redeveloping it. These gear-shaped islands are entirely man-made and are an iconic piece of the original puzzle of which Mecom once dreamed. (Image coordinates: 29.287981, -94.967478)
