The Morris Island Light, Morris Island, SC (click to see full size)

Each year Pictometry imagery is used to create a calendar.  We’ll post the images on a monthly basis moving forward.  October’s image is from the 2014 Americana-themed calendar and features Morris Island Light.

Completed in 1876, the Morris Island Light was the third lighthouse built on that spot, and was originally over a thousand feet from the shoreline. Construction to protect the shipping lanes into nearby Charleston, South Carolina altered the ocean currents enough that land began eroding away on that side of the island. By the 1930s the shoreline had reached the lighthouse, and by the 1960s the U.S. Coast Guard built a replacement and decommissioned the original. Today the lighthouse is owned by a grassroots organization of local residents and others concerned at preserving its storied history. 32.69539, -79.883679
