October 2016 Calendar Image

crater in Maui

The 2016 calendar showcases twelve of our team’s favorite Pictometry images out of more than 28 million captured in the 2014-2015 image season. The October 2016 image brings us to Hawaii.

This crater is associated with the East Maui Volcano which encompasses 75% of the Hawaiian island. Early Hawaiians called this volcano Haleakalā, which means “House of the Sun.”

In local folklore, the volcano’s summit was home to the demigod Māui who captured the sun and sent it on its slow journey across the sky. (Image coordinates: 20.732157, -156.386606)
