Okanogan County, WA received the 2015 Jurisdiction of the Year Award presented at the Thompson Reuters Conference for their efforts in rapidly assisting with a large and untamed wildfire in July 2014.

Okanogan County is the largest county in the State of Washington, covering nearly three millions acres of land. When the largest wildfire in the history of the state broke out after a lightning storm with high winds, over 250,000 acres of private and public land in the county was impacted. More than 250 single family residences were destroyed, creating a value loss of approximately $29 million.

Scott D. Furman, Okanogan County Assessor, was approached on July 21, soon after the fire was extinguished to begin developing an initial damage assessment spreadsheet. With their iPads, the team used Pictometry’s MobileAssessment to review the parcels and their structures to find the damage created by the fire. Within one week the assessment spreadsheet was completed.

The final spreadsheet was utilized by the American Red Cross in addition to several other service providers to assist landowners affected by the wildfire.
