Our 8 Favorite ‘Spooktacular’ Aerial Images

Last month, we showed you our favorite images from this summer, but now we’re going to kick off autumn with some unconventional photos that fans of all things Halloween will surely enjoy.
Summer may be over, but there’s still time to get to your favorite amusement park for Halloween festivities. We found these spiders creeping up the side of the American Eagle rollercoaster at Six Flags Great America in Chicago. Earlier this year, we spotted the ghost town of Morley, Colorado. The town existed between 1878 and 1956 and was a coal mining town for much of that time. Today, this is all that remains of Morley.
Morley is just one of many abandoned locations throughout the United States that we’ve flown over. We’ve also captured the North and South Brother Islands between the Bronx and Rikers Island in New York.
The larger of the two, North Brother Island, was the site of Riverside Hospital (seen up top above), where the infamous “Typhoid Mary” was confined for more than 20 years. Mary Mallon, a cook for a number of wealthy families, infected at least 50 people with the deadly typhoid fever in the early 20th century despite showing no symptoms of the disease herself. North Brother Island has remained abandoned – by human inhabitants, at least – since the 1960s but is today a designated bird sanctuary.
This cliff-side resort isn’t just known for that gorgeous view of the Snoqualmie Falls in Washington. The Salish Lodge & Spa stood in for the exterior of the Great Northern Hotel on early ’90s TV series Twin Peaks. This stunning location is less than an hour away from our Bothell office.
Although not seen on film, this location may be responsible for one of the most famous horror stories of all time. The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, served as author Stephen King’s inspiration for the Overlook Hotel in his novel The Shining. The only guests in the hotel at the time, King and his wife stayed in the reportedly haunted Room 217 toward the end of the hotel’s tourist season. The book was later adapted into the Stanley Kubrick film of the same name.
If you look closely, you can tell that this area is actually the set of AMC’s The Walking Dead. Raleigh Studios Atlanta serves as a set for the zombie apocalypse drama.
Zombie outbreaks aren’t only contained to film sets. The Monroeville Mall just east of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, may look like any other shopping center, but it was actually the filming location for George Romero’s classic film Dawn of the Dead in the late 1970s. The cast and crew filmed at night when the mall was closed to give the movie that genuine end-of-the-world atmosphere.
For a time, the Monroeville Mall featured a museum dedicated to the film and all things zombie, but in 2013 it was relocated to Evans City, Pennsylvania, the home of Romero’s first film Night of the Living Dead.
