How to Observe National Roof Over Your Head Day
Few things in life are as important as having a roof over your head. National Roof Over Your Head Day is observed each year on December 3 in the United States. The day was created to raise awareness for housing issues and to remind us to be thankful for what we do have—starting with the roofs over our heads.
Unfortunately, many people across the United States lack this basic necessity. In 2017, more than 550,000 people in the United States—including 58,000 families with children—were homeless on any given night.
For others, housing may be insufficient and in disrepair. Such was the case in Toledo, Ohio, where approximately 15,000 roofs were determined to be in need of repair. This year, Maumee Valley Habitat for Humanity set out to replace dozens of roofs for those with the most need.
Builders working with the non-profit organization sought to increase efficiency on their projects. EagleView donated measurement reports at no cost to roofers doing the work on these properties. The reports speed up the estimating and planning stages of a roofing job and enable contractors to place precise material orders. As a result, Toledo residents quickly received their new roofs.

Practice gratitude.
During the busy holiday season, it’s so easy to lose sight of what matters most. Spend time on this day—and every day—recognizing the things in life you might be taking for granted. Start your day listing three things you’re grateful for, or reach out to someone who has made a difference in your life and say thank you.
Get involved.
Does your community have an organization that helps people in need? If so, ask them how you can help! Volunteer at a shelter, soup kitchen, or food cupboard to ensure that everyone has a warm meal and a safe place to stay this season. If the holiday season has you crunched for time, see if you can donate household items, clothing, or money to the cause.
Participate in a “giving tree” for the holidays.
Giving trees are typically found in offices, churches, schools, hospitals, and other organizations. The tree is covered in gift tags, and each one lists an item for an individual or family in need.
