This month’s image is from the Americana-themed calendar and features one of the many islands in North America. This little island called ‘Gooseberry’ is part of Newport, Rhode Island, which was founded in 1639, nearly twenty years after the landing of the Mayflower at Plymouth Rock.
Newport has a rich and varied history that carries it from European colonists seeking religious freedom to a thriving, modern tourist destination. In between, it has been used as a stronghold for the British during the Revolutionary War, a lavish playground for the elite wealthy during the gilded age at the turn of the last century and a major base for the U.S. Navy.
